The Story

In Spring 2010, a friend and I decided to start lobbying for a new skatepark to be built in our town of Cloquet, MN. Given the example our previous skatepark set, we were told that advocating for a skatepark would be an uphill battle. Since then I have been serving as a commissioner on the Cloquet Parks & Rec Board and currently meeting monthly with a small but passionate advocacy group made up of skaters of all ages, parents and key figures in the community. We have held 15 fundraisers to date and continue to host them to reach our fundraising goal of $250,000. As we were warned, gaining the city’s approval has definitely been a huge hurdle in this advocacy. Yet, through our persistence, the city has acknowledged our commitment to this project and we maintain their support. As a newly established non-profit organization, we are ready to move forward and work hard to make this skatepark happen!

Skaters gettin’ rad at the former Cloquet skatepark circa 2006. The skatepark was torn down in 2008 as a result of bad location.┬áThe park’s low-key atmosphere made it a haven for troublesome activities.

The skateboarders of Cloquet do not currently have a skatepark of  their own.
